The Making of Obama

This is an exciting time -- to be able to witness the first African-American to become the President of the United States. I wanted to show my Obama pride by knitting this intarsia pattern of him and turning it into a picture to be hung in our home. The pattern is based on Shepard Fairley's famous poster. I used Laura Bireck's graph of the poster to create the pattern using Lion Brand Vanna's Choice solid color yarns.

This project has not been easy for me. Obama's neck and chin have caused a lot of problems and I have often had to unravel several rows to find the mistakes I've made. As a result, I wound up purchasing the Knitting Chart Keeper by Knit Picks which will help me keep better track of the rows I am working.

I had high hopes to finish the project before Inauguration Day, but that was a little too ambitious. Here is the project at the half-way point:

Wow! I'm impressed. It looks great, even though you say it's been hard. I'm sure it will look beautiful once finished!
